Goals

  • EXPAND TEACHER PARTICIPATION:
    • Increase the number of teacher and future teacher participants from 20 to 40.
    • Recruit teachers from El Cerrito and Richmond school districts, which are currently not-represented in our CSTA chapter and have high populations of students that are underrepresented in computer science.
    • Include a few outstanding UC Berkeley computer science seniors interested in a career in K-12 teaching. Some have already been attending our CSTA meetings, but we want to formally include them as part of our growing community.
  • INCREASE THE NUMBER AND QUALITY OF LOCAL COMPUTER SCIENCE CLASSES:
    • Provide professional development for local teachers to empower them to adapt UC Berkeley's curriculum from our successful national pilot for the new Advanced Placement : Principles course.
    • Bring in five school administrators from the under-served Bay Area school districts for the afternoon sessions on the first day, to share with them the critical importance to students and school districts of teaching computational thinking.
  • SUPPORT COMMUNITY AND COLLABORATION BETWEEN TEACHERS K-14:
    • Build our CSTA community and welcome new members with group activities throughout the CS4HS workshop.
    • Reach out to faculty at neighboring community colleges and universities that can serve as resources for our high school teacher participants about how to prepare students for success in computer science after high school.
    • Include K-8 teachers to develop collaborations that can create a path for success in computer science for diverse students in each school district.
  • EMPHASIZE TECHNIQUES FOR RECRUITING DIVERSE STUDENTS:
    • Demonstrate examples of pedagogy that aim to support a diverse population of students.
    • Share successful techniques for recruiting and retaining a diverse population of students.
    • Build plans as a community for recruiting techniques teachers will use at their home institution.

Logistics

  • Driving Directions:: here. We have set up a Google map to coordinate carpooling. Email ColleenL@berkeley.edu to be sent the link.
  • Public Transportation: From Downtown Berkeley BART: Campus Shuttle (P = Perimeter Line) available every 12 minutes from Downtown Berkeley BART Station (stand in front of "Sandwich Zone", 2117 Shattuck Ave). Take the Perimeter shuttle to Cory Hall (4 stops, ask the driver to announce the Cory Hall stop). Walk across the street to Soda Hall, the building with the Green tiles. Walk along LeRoy Avenue, passing the 4th floor E entrance on the left, and walk in to the N side of Soda Hall to the Wozniak lounge from the glassed archway doors "around the corner".
